I first met Herkey like so many others - through Great Danes. Twenty years ago I showed up on her front doorstep with our first Great Dane pup "Tess" for aftercare...on a Tuesday. Herkey was the GrandDam of ear aftercare and folks would drive long and far for her expertice. Those Tuesdays remained a time honored ritual and tradition - long after ears were up and standing.
I remember those Tuesdays were where I caught glimpses of how special Herkey really was and will always remain. Herk's home was always busy with friends and customers who would spend hours talking, laughing, and maybe a famous bloody mary or two! For me it was more - it was about learning.
Learning about what passion and committment were really all about. I watched Herk on Tuesdays and at dog shows...always in awe as she cultivated newcomers and oldtimers alike with her positive enthusiasm, sportsmanship and her passion for life and Great Danes. She was always infectious. For me it was the Great Dane - especially Anadane.
Herkey encouraged me to show Tess and the rest is history. Handlers come and go, Herk will be with me and many others forever.
I can honestly say that I am a better woman, both personnally and professionally, because of Herkey. Her wise advice was always right on, whether it be four-legged or two-legged. I am a better wife, daughter, friend, sportsman, exhibitor, breeder and military officer because of Herkey. Her values, ethics and integrity continue to serve.
Herkey would always tell me that we live on through our generations. That your foundation must be solid, stay true to yourself and your committments, that fads come and go - never be swayed. That our responsibility continues long after we are gone.
You must have noticed the Great Danes here today...they honor Herkey. They are the Alpha and the Omega. Sassy, Shelby & Soliel are the last litter we co-bred and born in Herk's home. Kobe the little brindle pup is the last litter we co-bred while Herk was still alive. They honor her 60 plus years of dedication and committment to the breed. She lives on through her Anadane.
Herkey's dedicated following is impressive, those who believe in Herk and her passion. As her partner I will stay true to her and all that she blessed me with - never to sway. She will always be a part of my life leading me and guiding me in all facetts and in everything I do. Her love and friendship is a huge gift and blessing that will always be honored and cherished.
It is with great love and affection that I say to you Herkey Mahalo, Aloha & God Speed my friend! Susan
