Mary Lou "Herkey" Pierce was born 1n 1924 in Laguna Beach, California. She spent her childhood growing up in the coastal communities of Southern California-she can remember when the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) was basically a dirt road.
Pictured above is Harold Castle, respected breeder of German Shepherds and Great Danes in Hawaii.
During WWII Harold Castle donated working dogs, including Great Danes, to the U.S. Military as working war dogs. The Working War Dogs were on the condition that once a K9 completed their military service they came home and were reunited with their families where they lived out the rest of their lives.

"TINA Bag A Bones"
Herkey "aquired" her first Great Dane by default. Lady Christina was given to Herkey and her husband Howard as a payment on a loan. "Tina Bag a Bones" is where Herkey's passion for Great Danes begun. Tina came complete with AKC papers and Herkey's show career began.
Tragedy almost diverted Herkey away from showing Great Danes - Two weeks before her first show. Herkey was sitting at home painting the "bench" signs for her first dog show with Tina when her father and father-in-law appeared at the door-she immediately knew that something was terribly wrong. Herkey became a widow at the age of 23. With her first show two weeks away-the furthest thing from her mind was to actually attend and compete. Only after the strong encouragement from Howard's father did she go, founding Anadane Kennel in 1944.
Herkey established Anadane Kennel with her two foundation dam's ~ Lady Christina and Pandora of Kaneohe. "Tina" was eventually bred to Ch Valor of Ridgecrest, producing CH Anadane's Christina's Var. Shortly after she purchased another female for show and for her foundation bloodline, from Harold Castle in Hawaii, Pandora of Kaneohe "Pandy". Pandy was bred to Ch Damocles of Hazelcrest, producing BISS Ch Gudrun of Anadane. Thus establishing Anadane Kennel.
She has been competing in the sport of pure-breed dogs ever since. Breeding and showing Great Danes became her life passion.
ORIGIN of the Name Anadane & Registration
The origin of the kennel name Anadane is simple-it is the blending of two words Anaheim (location) and Dane (passion). Herkey registered Anadane Kennel with the American Kennel Club in 1951, becoming Anadane Kennel, Registered. She has maintained continuous registration ever since.
HOW We Came To Be- Herkey & Susan
My parents had Great Danes, my husband grew up with "small dogs". After two years of tireless pursuit and one night of good friends and good "drink" my husband finally relented that a Great Dane would be a perfect addition to our family. The next day I was out looking and that is how Tess came into our family. I showed up on Herkey's doorstep with my newly cropped Great Dane puppy in tow for after-care. We have been close and constant friends ever since. She encouraged me to show, taught me how to handle in the show ring and what the definition of sportsmanship truly means.
Herkey became my mentor. In 1997 Herkey asked me to be full partner in Anadane Kennel ~ I was speechless and honored. Her knowledge is extensive and her passion endless. Stay true and do not be swayed by fad. The basics never change. That the generations are our responsibility and we are accountable even when we are long gone-so you better know what is behind them. As a respected breeder and licensed professional handler Herkie has bred many champions. Her commitment to type, soundness, temperament and longevity continue on today.
Herkey has been a member of the Great Dane Club of California continuously for over 5o years. I am a current and active member of the Great Dane Clubs of America, California and Hawaii, Leeward Training Club of Oahu and the Working Dog Club of Hawaii. We abide by the Great Dane Club of America's Breeder 's Code of Ethics and do health screening/certifications.
